Further to my confusion with the past history of SP #8632 and #8689 , Brad Hoeme sent the following info which really clears up any confusion on my part...
UP had regular SD40 's numbered #3101 and #3103, part of the #3098-3122 series built in 1971. The Union Pacific 1998 Locomotive Directory lists SP #8632 and #8689 as originally UP #3101 and #3103 and goes on to list them as rebuilt from SD40 's. UP never had a SD40 -2 numbered #3101 until UP #1996 (the special painted olympic unit, originally UP #3339) was renumbered on Oct. 20, 1996 to #3101. The number #3103 has not been assigned to any unit since SD40 #3103 was retired from the UP. Before the UP got the CNW in 1995, UP's SD40 -2's started at #3123 and up. In Diesel Era it gives #8632's builder's number as 37907, which fits in the UP SD40 's #3098-3122's builder's number's of 37904-37928. This means #8632 and #8689 were originally UP SD40 's 3101 and 3103, built 9/71.
