lowell_amrine_sp-sunset-route 140K Beaumont, CA. Lowell Amrine Between 1978 and 1980, Southern Pacific took delivery of no less than 113 General Electric B30-7s. They immediately found work on the Sunset Route, illustrated here by 7868, in the company of two others and spliced by three SDs, leading a long westbound piggyback down into the upper reaches of San Timoteo Canyon near Beaumont, California in June 1981.	lowell_amrine_sp-sw-west-colton 59K Cruds at Colton Lowell Amrine Approximately thirty percent of the SW1500 production run came from EMD adorned just like these two. An even one hundred digits apart in number, they are shown working the Riverside Turn out of Colton past a Magnetic Flagman over trackage once owned by the Pacific Electric on an autumn day 1984.	lowell_amrine_sp-wcasy-train 94K Beet Train in San Timoteo Lowell Amrine Assembled from the hump at West Colton and bound for the Alton & Southern yard in St. Louis, WCASY grinds up San Timoteo Canyon between Ordway and El Casco in the last light of an autumn evening. The combination of an SD40T-2 leading a pair of B30-7s and spliced by a GP9 was not all that uncommon two decades ago on the Sunset Route. Back in 1966, Southern Pacific bestowed eight GP40s on subsidiary Cotton Belt as an after thought to their own order for more than ten times as many SD versions. These eight were not as well thought of as their six axle counterparts and at the first sign of a turndown in traffic would be leased out to anyone who would take them. Although the beet rush was not a normal haunt for these units, the 7602 passed through the familiar landscape of West Colton out front of an eclectic six-axle trio that July 1980 day in route from California's Imperial Valley to the Santa Maria Valley. Ironically, the GP has out lived both the railroad and the beet gons, rebuilt to SSW 7961. The U30C was not as lucky going first to a dead line in Los Angeles, then a scrap yard.
