C-30-1 #11 composite caboose, was rebuilt as a prototype 'steel' cupola caboose. SP then built 50 virtual copies as Class C-40-1 #1000 - 1049 in 1937. The only difference noted was the production C-40-1's were ~5 inches longer at 35' 7/16" over striker castings than the #11.
As originally built, they had large underframe mounted toolboxes, photo's show these removed in later years, and replaced with battery boxes or possibly fuel tanks... roofwalks and end ladders were removed on some, and some even had windows plated over.
Due to their longevity, they also received the usual marker light and radio antenna upgrades.
Pre-war lettering style was simply the roadname initials, post-war SP decided to spell out the company name in Roman script. 1955 saw the introduction of 'Billboard' or block lettering and painting of the end walls or bulkheads in Daylight orange.
One C-40-1 #1031 was painted overall silver with 'Trailer-Flatcar Service' as per 7 C-40-3 cabooses.
