        Remove the automatic brake handle in HANDLE
    OFF position and remove the independent brake
    valve handle in RELEASE position.

    After positioning electrical controls and cocks in com- municating signal and A.T.S. systems, if unit so equipped, controls should be cut in without delay as follows:

        Apply handle of automatic brake valve in
    HANDLE OFF position and insert handle of the
    independent brake valve in RELEASE position;

        Move independent brake valve handle to full
    APPLICATION position then cut in this brake valve
    by depressing the handle of the MU-2A valve and
    moving it to LEAD OR DEAD position;

        Move the automatic brake valve handle to full
    SERVICE position and slowly move the cut-off valve
    handle to a point just short of PASSENGER position,
    allowing the equalizing reservoir pressure to be
    restored to slightly below brake pipe pressure before
    placing the cut-off valve handle in FREIGHT position;

       When handling trains of less than 25 cars having
    passenger brake equipment, place the cut-off valve
    handle in PASSENGER position.

    2-B.    The dynamic brake must be used whenever practicable in reducing and controlling train speed, and with its use care must be exercised to prevent harsh slack action.

    In using dynamic brake, ten seconds should elapse after throttle is placed in idle position before making any move to initiate dynamic braking. When speed of train and dynamic braking characteristics of units comprising the engine are such that harsh slack action would result from dynamic braking, it is permissible to use the independent brake in lieu of the dynamic brake to gather the slack gently. Automatic service brake applications while the dynamic brake controlling lever is in OFF position should be avoided.
