Southern Pacific GP35R
61 units rebuilt
6301 ex6630 was rebuilt instead as #4160
In 1977 SP rebuilt one GP35 ex6553 nee7441 as #6300. Then prepared drawings and specifications for Contract rebuilders to rebuild a further 60:
These were all SP units, no SSW units were involved.
All these units were rebuilt in kind, retaining their turbo-supercharged 567's, but having the latest 645 compatible engine assemblies fitted.
Any that did not have SP 5-light packages both fore and aft had them applied.
The MK rebuilt units had a different nose 'red-wing' shape and non-standard numberboard numbers, the CN rebuilt units were exactly as per SP standards.
Although the 6300's traveled all over the SP system, their assigned maintenance base was Houston.
