SP ordered 29 SD35's in May of 1963, numbered 4816 - 4844 the first batch arrived 12/1964 and the last by 3-4/1965. They were initially assigned to the Tehachapi Freight Pool.

In the 1965 systemwide renumber they gained the 6900 series numbers.

4 units were rebuilt in kind at Sacramento Locomotive Works in 1974, renumbered 6950 - 6953 they were reclassified as SD35E's

Another 10 units were rebuilt with non-turbocharged engines between 1976-78, renumbered 4700 - 4709, they were reclassified SD35R's

4 units were never rebuilt, renumbered 3106 - 3109, they were assigned to the West Colton Yard.

11 units seem to have been retired between 1981 and 1985. They appear on a 1981 Roster, but not a 1985 Roster...
