SP received two orders of SD40's, the first #8400-8478 in 1966, the second #8479-8488 in 1968. Both orders look to have had large snowplows and SP's 5-light show on the front only, except the first order has a ratchet handbrake in the nose. The second order distinguishes itself, by having 'L' shaped engineers windows, and a brake wheel on a housing attached to the long hood end.

Beginning mid 1980, all surviving SD40's were rebuilt to SD40R's, going from class EF630-1 and EF630-2 to EF630R-1.
