In 1954 three F3A's and six F3B's were sent to EMD to be rebuilt to F9 standards, this included external as well as internal modifications - so these looked like F9's when complete. EMD then supplied kits for T&NO to rebuild the rest of their F3A/B's in their Houston Shops.
These rebuilds were not renumbered sequentially in order, but as rebuilt, they were also reclassed.
The rebuilding program continued until December 1959.
Some were released painted in the Halloween scheme.
According to the designation system used by Extra 2200 South, these are listed as F3Au and F3Bu, but SP knew them as F9Am and F9Bm.
