Weathering Paint Mixes

Almost any shade of Black and Brown can be mixed to give a 'dirty' weathering color. I have used 50/50 mixes of the following Floquil Paints, with a varying degree of success.

Engine Black / Rail Brown

Engine Black / Earth

Engine Black / Mud

As always, with anything new, try it on a scrap loco shell or car to see how you like it.

My all-time 'favorite' mix for painting diesel loco grilles, comes from the Robert.J.Zenk article on Superdetailing a Tunnel Motor, in the January 1985 issue of Model Railroader.

  • Grille Mix:
    • 50 percent Floquil Engine Black
    • 50 percent Floquil Roof Brown

This is then thinned 50 / 50 with Auto Lacquer Thinner prior to use.
