The T&NO GP's #240-249 were delivered in Black Widow, with Southern Pacific lettering sublettered TNO at the top of the hood above the numberboards. These were not dual control, so just had the more standard single wings only on the front.
The T&NO GP's #280-283 were painted as above, but being dual control units, had wings both ends when delivered in Black Widow.
T&NO #240-249 and #280-283 were all delivered with the large Mars barrel signal light on both ends.
Also like SP SD7's some units may have had the Nathan M3R24's which were later changed to Nathan P-3's.
Passenger service ended on the T&NO in late 1950's early 1960's.
T&NO #240-249 not being dual control, went straight into the freight pool. All had their steam generators removed between 1959-60, and were renumbered #3411 -3420 in 1965, except units vacated before then.
T&NO #280-283 were transferred to California in 1960 and 1961, and being dual controlled, joined the commute fleet and renumbered #5892-5895.
However! things get a little complicated here. #280 and 281 were renumbered #5894 and 5895, then renumbered 3000 and 3001 in the 1965 renumbering.
#282 and 283 were renumbered #5892 and 5893, and placed in the freight pool as it was believed that both had their steam generators removed. Then #3421 and 3422 in the 1965 renumbering. On discovery that 3422 still had its steam generator it was used in commute service (as 3422) until 1967, when it was renumbered #3010.
All surviving GP9's were eventually rebuilt into GP9E's.
